How to write an offer of help that actually gets a reply

The difference between an offer a founder acts on and one they delete is almost always specificity. Here is the anatomy of both.

Updated 1 September 2026

Every founder who raises is approached immediately, by dozens of people, most of whom want something. The bar for a reply is not politeness or credentials. It is whether the first line proves you already understand the problem they are about to hit.

The shape that works

One sentence, three parts: the specific thing you have done, the context that makes it comparable, and the part of their stated plan it maps to.

  • "I opened New York for two UK analytics companies selling into insurance carriers, and the first renewal cycle is where both nearly came apart."
  • "I have taken two maritime hardware firms through USCG certification and can tell you which submissions actually gate the timeline."
  • "I ran payroll and entity setup for a Series B expanding into Germany, and the works council step is the one people miss."

The shape that fails

  • A description of your firm and its capabilities.
  • Congratulations followed by a request for a call.
  • A list of logos with no claim about what you personally did.
  • Anything that would read identically if sent to fifty other companies.

Why the form is only 300 characters

It is a constraint on purpose. It removes the paragraph where people describe themselves and forces the sentence where they prove something. It also makes offers readable in bulk, which is what makes a founder actually open them.

What happens to what you write

It goes privately to the company, and only to the company. It is never published, it does not create a connection, and no one else can read it. If a company has said it is not taking approaches of your kind, we do not offer you that option and the server refuses it, so you never waste the sentence.

A note on what this is not

AfterRaise does not sell access, does not rank offers by who pays, and has no paid placement of any kind. If a company opens a conversation with you, it is because of the sentence you wrote.
